Integrated Digital Printing for High-Resolution Traceability Codes

The Versatex Black is a digital inkjet printbar engineered to integrate 1D and 2D variable data printing (VDP) into established analogue label presses and finishing lines. By providing a modular solution for high-definition coding, the system facilitates the transition toward a more transparent digital supply chain in the food, pharmaceutical, and consumer goods industries.

Technical Integration of Variable Data
The Versatex Black addresses the requirement for high-contrast, human-readable, and machine-scannable codes, including serialization, authentication, and personalization data. Its primary function is to allow converters to add digital capabilities to existing hardware without necessitating a complete replacement of analogue workflows. This is particularly relevant as the global automotive data ecosystem and general manufacturing sectors move toward more granular tracking requirements.

The system supports the upcoming GS1 Sunrise 2027 transition, which mandates the capability to process 2D barcodes at the point of sale. By utilizing real-time, on-the-fly data processing, the printbar ensures that unique identifiers are applied to each unit, aiding in brand protection and regulatory compliance.

Core Jetting Technologies and Performance
To maintain stability at production speeds, the system incorporates Xaar’s proprietary TF Technology and High Laydown (HL) capability. These mechanisms provide continuous ink recirculation directly past the back of the printhead nozzle during drop ejection. This process prevents sedimentation and nozzle blocking, which are common failure points when using high-pigment black inks.

During the interpack 2026 trade show in Düsseldorf (May 7–13, 2026), technical demonstrations led by Justin Noble, Director of Product & Applications, showcased the system’s ability to maintain high-speed jetting while preserving edge definition on various substrates. The integration of these fluid management systems allows the printbar to deliver the high-contrast output necessary for Grade A barcode scanning, even under industrial conditions.

Strategic Compliance and Industry Standards
As a GS1 UK Approved Partner, the manufacturer has aligned the hardware’s output with the technical specifications required for global supply chain interoperability. This certification verifies that the printbar can produce barcodes that meet ISO/IEC standards for print quality at standard production velocities.

The Versatex Black provides a path for manufacturers to meet increasing demands for speed and reliability. According to Tom Mooney, Product Manager at Xaar, the technology serves as a practical method for converters to deliver consistent codes while expanding opportunities for digital connectivity and consumer engagement through scannable media.

Comparative Industrial Positioning
While traditional thermal transfer overprinting (TTO) and continuous inkjet (CIJ) are established methods for coding, the Versatex Black utilizes drop-on-demand (DOD) piezo technology. Compared to CIJ, which often operates at lower resolutions, the DOD approach used here provides higher native DPI, which is essential for the complex data density found in 2D Data Matrix and QR codes used for advanced logistics. Furthermore, the printbar’s ability to span the full web width offers a throughput advantage over traversing coding heads in high-volume label finishing.
