The investment addresses a critical shift in the industry: the move toward fully automated packing processes. To meet the extreme precision these systems require, DS Smith is installing a state-of-the-art Göpfert Rotary Die Cutter and five new flexographic printing units. This technology utilizes servo-driven vacuum transport and automatic register control to ensure that every box is cut and printed with millimeter accuracy, reducing material waste and preventing jams in customers' automated lines.
Beyond precision, the upgrade significantly bolsters supply chain resilience. Once fully operational, the Grenaa plant will increase its annual capacity by 15 million m² of corrugated board. This added volume allows for shorter lead times and better forecasting, helping customers in e-commerce and the food and beverage sectors navigate rapid market fluctuations.

This Danish expansion is part of a broader Northern European strategy that includes a 3,000 sqm extension of DS Smith’s facility in Värnamo, Sweden. Aligned with their "Redefining Packaging for a Changing World" strategy, these upgrades ensure that as the world moves toward a circular economy, DS Smith can provide the high-volume, sustainable, and circular solutions required by global brands. The transition is set to be completed in phases through June 2027.
