Bühler surpasses 100 battery mixing lines delivered worldwide

Bühler has delivered 113 complete production systems for lithium-ion battery slurry and dry compound manufacturing over the past decade, marking a key milestone in its industrial battery business. The achievement underscores Bühler’s expanding role as a global process technology partner for large-scale and more sustainable battery cell production.

More than 70 lithium-ion electrode slurry lines have been installed in China, one of the world’s most competitive battery manufacturing markets. Additional projects across Europe and North America reflect Bühler’s growing international footprint and its capability to support battery producers in diverse industrial environments.

Continuous mixing for higher efficiency

Battery manufacturing represents 20% to 30% of total cell production costs, placing strong emphasis on yield optimization, energy efficiency, and total cost reduction. Bühler addresses these requirements with continuous mixing technology based on twin-screw systems that integrate:
  • Raw material dosing
  • Pre-mixing and kneading
  • Fine dispersing
  • Degassing
This fully continuous process replaces conventional batch mixing and reduces energy consumption significantly. Bühler reports energy use of 56 kWh per ton of slurry — approximately four times lower than traditional batch systems. High automation levels further improve yield and lower total cost of ownership.

Supporting Europe’s industrial scale-up
Beyond Asia, Bühler supports Europe’s battery ecosystem through collaborations with R&D and industrial partners.

Notable projects include cooperation with the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre in the United Kingdom and the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB in Germany, helping bridge the gap between pilot-scale research and industrial production.

At industrial scale, Bühler is delivering continuous mixing lines to FIB S.p.A. for its Teverola 2 facility in Italy. The plant is designed for an annual production capacity of 8 GWh, representing a major step toward large-scale European battery manufacturing.

Process expertise beyond equipment
Bühler complements its hardware portfolio with integrated process engineering and on-site support to stabilize quality and accelerate production ramp-up. As new gigafactories move from pilot operations to full-scale output, this combination of equipment and process know-how becomes increasingly critical.

Next-generation battery production
Having surpassed 100 delivered mixing systems, Bühler is now focusing on next-generation battery manufacturing technologies, including Dry Battery Electrode (DBE) processes. With global demand for energy storage rising, efficiency, quality, and sustainability are becoming decisive competitive factors.

The milestone positions Bühler as a key industrial technology partner in the evolving global battery manufacturing landscape.
