Operational requirements in the food processing industry necessitate high standards of hygiene and reliability to maintain production volumes and product quality. For dairy producer Zott, the installation of a new mozzarella packaging line required a conveyor system capable of meeting strict sanitary regulations while ensuring long-term operational flexibility.
The food production environment demands systems that minimize contamination risks and withstand regular cleaning cycles. In this specific application, Zott required a solution that complied with international food safety standards and could be integrated into an existing production layout without requiring major structural modifications to the facility.
The company selected the VarioFlow plus chain conveyor system from Bosch Rexroth, utilizing stainless steel components. The technical selection was based on the system’s hygienic design, featuring sliding rails and chains that comply with FDA/CFR 21 requirements. To maintain sanitary integrity, the stainless steel ball bearings, returns, and curve wheels are sealed on both sides and lubricated with NSF-H1 food-grade grease. This mechanical configuration reduces cleaning frequency and mitigates component wear.
The project was executed by HELDELE Mechatronik GmbH, a Rexroth Certified Excellence Partner. HELDELE designed and manufactured custom lateral guides for the VarioFlow chain using stainless steel. The installation utilized universal drive units that allow for flexible motor mounting, which eliminated the need for spatial changes in the factory. Patented roller curves with low-friction properties were integrated to facilitate long conveyance routes while maintaining a compact footprint. The assembly was conducted during a scheduled production shutdown to avoid unplanned downtime.
The modularity of the VarioFlow plus system allows for future adjustments or expansions of the packaging line. Technically, the low-friction roller curves contribute to lower energy consumption and reduced mechanical stress on the drive units. The use of stainless steel materials and specialized lubricants ensures ongoing compliance with food safety regulations while reducing maintenance costs. The collaboration between the manufacturer and the system integrator resulted in a rapid deployment and a stable material flow for the mozzarella packaging process.
