Icelandic company Ísfélagið takes the next step towards efficiency and profitability in their Vestmannaeyjar whitefish processing facility with a smart investment: the RoboBatcher Box from Marel. The RoboBatcher Box will boost packing capacity and simplify operations. It marks a major step towards their goals for automation.
A strong history: Marel and Ísfélagið
In 1983, Marel was just two people and a small workshop in Garðabær. Ísfélagið (operating as Hraðfrystistöðin) recognized the groundbreaking technological innovation of Marel scales and became one of Marel’s first customers. Those early scales remained in use at Ísfélagið for decades. In fact, it was only a few weeks ago that Ísfélagið retired Marel scale, serial number 41 - a true collector’s item. Scale 41 began its work life in salted fish processing, ending its career as a final inspection scale for packed pelagic products.
Since this first purchase, the relationship between Marel and Ísfélagið has flourished, with Marel providing innovative solutions that continue to enhance efficiency in Ísfélagið's processing operations.
The latest investment: RoboBatcher Box
The new Robobatcher Box solution installed at Ísfélagið’s Vestmannaeyjar facility is designed to pack back fillets and loins into 3 or 5 kg boxes with unmatched speed and accuracy. It fully automates the dispatch process, ensuring that once a box reaches target weight and piece count it is immediately conveyed out of the robot and automatically replaced by another. The two-lane packing line is equipped with a transfer system, checkweighers, and labelers, providing a fully automated dispatch system that minimizes manual contact, optimizes throughput and dramatically reduces giveaway.
Advanced processing technology in the groundfish/pelagic factory
Ísfélagið’s processing facility in Vestmannaeyjar, is almost entirely equipped with Marel equipment. The FleXitrim, FleXicut, FleXisort, SmartLine Graders and Robobatcher Box , along with all scales, including the recently purchased flow scales, work together to create seamless efficiency to Ísfélagið operations.
The RoboBatcher Box is the latest addition to Ísfélagið’s refurbishment project. With a focus on increasing automation, the project lowers the need for manual labor while maximizing yield and product quality, ensuring Ísfélagið is ready for the future.
