Robotic Container Distribution for Packaging Lines

Krones has introduced Robobox SynFlow, a robotic container distribution system designed for beverage and packaging production lines. The system uses tripod robots and intelligent motion control to distribute bottles and cans into packer lanes with higher precision and reduced manual intervention, supporting automated packaging operations in the digital supply chain.

Traditional container distribution systems rely on fixed guide rails and pre-defined routing patterns to direct containers into packaging lanes. In high-speed production environments, irregular container flow or gaps in the line can lead to inconsistent lane filling, requiring operators to manually correct the distribution process to maintain packer efficiency. Robobox SynFlow replaces this approach with robotic grouping technology capable of dynamically adjusting container positioning in real time.

Robotic Control for Continuous Container Flow

The Robobox SynFlow system uses tripod-based delta robots with parallel kinematics to identify, group and direct incoming containers into the required lanes before packaging. According to Krones, the robotics system continuously monitors the number and position of containers in the line and compensates for gaps in the product flow by adjusting container grouping during operation.

The system is designed to maintain a consistent supply of containers to the packer, reducing interruptions during the final stages of a production batch. This approach supports higher line stability in automated beverage and consumer goods packaging operations.

Krones offers the system in two configurations. A compact version equipped with a single tripod robot is designed for throughput rates of up to 55,000 containers per hour and supports production lines with a single incoming container flow. A larger configuration with two tripod robots can process up to 105,000 containers per hour and is intended for lines operating with dual labellers or multiple container streams. Both versions can distribute containers across three to nine lanes in the Variopac Pro packaging system.

Handling Glass, PET and Specially-Shaped Containers

The Robobox SynFlow supports common beverage container formats including glass bottles, PET bottles and cans. The system can process container diameters ranging from 40 mm to 125 mm. Krones stated that the robotic handling system is particularly suited for specially-shaped containers that are more difficult to manage with conventional guide systems.

Positive-fit precision grippers position the containers gently and accurately within the assigned lanes. The robotic grippers can also rotate containers to align labels consistently inside the final package, supporting presentation and orientation requirements in the automotive data ecosystem of modern production tracking and packaging inspection systems.

The delta robots used in the system employ simultaneous multi-axis motion through parallel kinematics. The drives remain mounted in fixed positions rather than moving with the robotic arms, reducing moving mass and supporting precise high-speed operation. Internal conveyor systems are powered by permanent-magnet motors that, according to Krones, consume up to 50% less electrical power than conventional asynchronous motors.

Safety and Damage Prevention Mechanisms

The robotic control system includes integrated monitoring functions designed to detect operational anomalies such as fallen or displaced containers. When abnormal conditions are detected, the system initiates an emergency stop sequence intended to prevent mechanical damage to both the machine and the containers.

The gripper guide paddles are magnetically attached to the tripod mechanism. In the event of a collision, the paddles detach automatically instead of transferring impact forces into the machine structure, reducing the likelihood of component damage and shortening maintenance downtime.

Production Line Footprint Reduction

Although Robobox SynFlow adds a dedicated robotic machine to the packaging line, Krones stated that the overall production footprint can still be reduced compared with conventional layouts.

In the smaller system configuration, the robotic control enables container speeds to be adjusted down to 16% of the actual line speed, reducing the need for additional conveyor sections used for flow management. In the larger configuration, the elimination of an Inliner allows direct integration between labellers, the distribution system and the packer.

According to Krones, the resulting line layout can reduce the total production footprint by approximately 10%, which may support facility optimisation in high-throughput beverage and packaging plants.
