Inverted Polypropylene Packaging System for Wet Pet Food

Amcor and Ge Wu An deployed an inverted cup packaging system designed to alter wet pet food portion dispensing and container composition in China. This multi-material polymer structure addresses mechanical release and material reduction challenges in consumer pet food packaging.

Background and Collaboration
Amcor, a global packaging developer, collaborated with Ge Wu An, a premium pet food brand operated by Jianmo Biotechnology Co., Ltd. The initiative targets structural deficiencies inherent in traditional metal food containers, including edge hazards and incomplete product evacuation. Cooperation was necessary to merge consumer behavioral data regarding pet feeding routines with specialized extrusion and sealing engineering.

Technical Solution and Responsibilities
The packaging system comprises a polypropylene cup body coupled with a top lidding film and a bottom seal film. Operational mechanics rely on sequential removal of the bottom seal, allowing the user to invert and release the contents as a single consolidated mass without mechanical scraping. Amcor managed the material selection, film integrity, and sealing parameters, while Ge Wu An defined the geometric and volumetric requirements based on food rheology and portion sizes.

Deployment and Integration
The solution underwent a multi-stage development cycle exceeding one year through Amcor's Catalyst innovation platform before commercial market introduction in China. Integration required adapting existing high-speed filling and sealing lines to handle the multi-layer polymer configuration instead of rigid metal cans.

Applications and Operational Impact
The system is applied in the commercial wet pet food sector, specifically for high-viscosity formulations such as fresh-meat mousses. Operational benefits include the elimination of sharp metallic rims, prevention of pull-ring structural failures, and complete product extraction which reduces organic waste within the vessel.

Compared to traditional aluminium cans, the polypropylene cup-and-film architecture lowers material consumption per unit and decreases aggregate shipment mass. This reduction in package weight lowers transit energy requirements while maintaining barrier properties required for product shelf life.
