Amcor, Petino Biotechnology, and Sea Fairy have established an engineering and manufacturing cooperation to develop and produce card-style, single-dose flexible packaging for the pet nutrition sector. The technical initiative targets the portioning and preservation of oxygen-sensitive liquids, specifically pet fish oil and liquid nutritional supplements.
Industrial Challenges and Applications
Traditional multi-serve bottle packaging for liquid pet nutrition presents three primary operational and formulation stability challenges: inaccurate manual dosing, nutrient degradation caused by repeated oxygen exposure, and bacterial contamination introduced during recurrent opening. In industrial and end-user applications, lipid-rich formulations such as deep-sea fish oil undergo rapid oxidation when exposed to ambient air, degrading the nutritional profile.
To address these chemical stability and dispensing problems without creating bottlenecks between package design and mass production, the three companies integrated materials science, automated filling machinery, and formulation requirements from the initial engineering phase. Amcor provides the flexible packaging material and structural design, Petino Biotechnology acts as the original equipment manufacturer specializing in automated single-unit independent packaging, and Sea Fairy defines the liquid formulation parameters and end-user dosing specifications.
Technical Architecture and Material Properties
The resulting packaging system utilizes a card-style, unit-dose structural design combined with high-barrier flexible film. The multi-layer barrier film restricts oxygen and moisture ingress, protecting sensitive polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish oil from oxidative degradation and extending shelf stability without requiring secondary preservative adjustments.
At the mechanical level, the pack features a semi-rigid backing integrated with pre-scored fold lines. Instead of requiring cutting tools or calibrated measuring devices, the user applies one-handed mechanical pressure to snap the card along the scored line. This action creates a controlled dispensing channel that releases a pre-measured volume of liquid supplement, ensuring dosing repeatability and eliminating cross-contamination across feeding cycles.
Manufacturing Integration and Scalability
Deploying card-style unit doses at commercial scale requires synchronizing film machinability with high-speed liquid filling tolerances. Petino Biotechnology executes the manufacturing process within standardized food-grade production workshops utilizing fully automated production lines. These lines incorporate high-precision, integrated form-fill-seal equipment designed to handle low-to-medium viscosity liquids while maintaining seal integrity across the pre-scored dispensing zone. Automated dosing and thermal sealing minimize human contact during manufacturing, reducing microbial risk and maintaining consistent fill weights across production batches.
“By bringing the technology, manufacturing and brand capabilities together from the start, we can help customers move more efficiently from concept to commercial production,” said Jeff Li, commercial general manager, Food and Personal Care, Amcor Flexibles China.
Operational Impact
Synchronizing film barrier properties with automated filling line parameters prior to commercialization reduces line commissioning times and material waste during production ramp-up. As Zhang Kai, Petino pet project lead, noted: “As a critical link in the supply chain and an OEM specializing in single-dose formats, Petino’s well-established manufacturing capabilities ensure that new products can be scaled up to stable, mass production.”
For the end application, the unit-dose architecture ensures volumetric accuracy per serving and maintains chemical stability until the moment of dispensation.
